An Eye-Opening Account of How Dr. Mahesh Gupta Built KENT RO Systems Ltd.

What is the first brand name that comes to your mind when you look for a water purifier? It’s undoubtedly, KENT RO Purifiers. A leading name in the water purifier industry, KENT RO Systems Ltd., was the pioneer in introducing the revolutionary Reverse Osmosis Technology in India. Founded in 1999, Dr. Mahesh Gupta put in a lot of effort and hard work to the brand of water purifiers to all new heights. From a backyard business to a company with a turnover of about 830 crores, Dr. Mahesh Gupta put in a lot of effort to establish KENT as a leading brand.

Early Life

It’s by fluke that Dr. Mahesh Gupta joined the water purifier industry and revolutionized it within a short span of time. Dr. Mahesh Gupta graduated from IIT Kanpur in 1975 and started working with Indian Oil Corporation as an engineer. Dr. Gupta always wanted to do something of his own and planned to work on oil conservation. He also started a small company in his backyard, SS Engineering, which focused on developing products that saved oil.

So, what Led to the Invention of RO Water Purifiers?

The introduction of water purifiers was more of an accident. When on a vacation, both the children of Dr. Gupta suffered from jaundice, all because of unhealthy drinking water. On thorough research, Dr. Gupta found that the UV purifiers, which most people used in those days were not appropriate to remove dissolved impurities in water. This led to a number of research and experiments, after which Dr. Gupta designed an RO purifier at home by importing a membrane and pump from the US. This is how the revolutionary idea of Reverse Osmosis water purifiers was born.

The Roadblocks in the Journey

Impressed by the product, Dr. Gupta decided to design more purifiers using the same RO technology. This was easier said than done. Many people were of the opinion that the purifiers were too expensive. However, some of the people who bought the purifier gave very positive reviews about the product designed by Dr. Gupta. Despite the positive feedback, the first year of operations of KENT was no cakewalk. After the launch of the company, he faced a lot of competition from some of the established brands.  Lack of capital and problems with permits are some of the reasons why the journey of KENT RO Systems Ltd., has been slow.

The Spectacular Growth

The company was growing slowly which is the reason why by 2006, Dr. Gupta realized the importance of advertising and marketing the product. Considering the product, they needed a renowned personality, who was also a mother to be the brand ambassador of the company. This is when they decided to rope in Hema Malini for advertising and marketing purposes. Gradually, the entire nation recognized KENT as a renowned brand. This was also the year when KENT earned revenue of  ₹ 30 crores.

The Glorious Present

Thanks to the determination and efforts of Dr. Mahesh Gupta, KENT RO has grown across the healthcare industry. Even after achieving immense success, Dr. Gupta still works hard and dreams big. Today, the leading water purifier brand has manufacturing plants in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, and Greater Noida, which was launched recently in a grand ceremony. The water purifiers from KENT also reduce wastage as they use an innovative Save Water Technology that retains more than 50% water as purified.     But i would like to share you one thing everything is perfect but YOUR SERVICE IS VERY POOR. I am from bangalore city and am using Kent pearl for past 3 years ...m am having recently the leakage problem from the machine and am complaining from the date 19th aug to till 24th aug to customer service .... But there is no response and they are giving the service technician person's number but he is not taking the phone and he is not attending but as per the schedule he supposed to come and attend the problem to fix it.

    It is very much disappointing me and like this you can count the number of customers feel which will sure get loss of your sales.

    As you know DrMahesh gupta sir made this reputation at high level and because of some of people it will get deteriorate.

    It is not a complaint its just to share after I red article of Mahesh gupta sir the man of succes story

    "  DR. MAHESH GUPTA  ---- PUREWATER MAN of India  "  with     "  IMPURE SERVICE DEPARTMENT  &  SPARE  PARTS "     ----  Sorry to use these words.

    I want to draw your attention for Spare Parts of your company as well as Service Engineers Job Profiles, if values our words then read otherwise delete this email with thought of that business in India running with casual behavior and no need to improve.   Still, I am going to write with this hope that you will take serious against this information.
    Firstly, I am a existing customer of yours who is using KENT Water Purifier and after 2 years I ordered a Membrane which comes with warranty of  3 Months.   After 3 Months that particular part which I bought of Rs. 2900 + Service Charge etc.  almost Rs. 3200/- not in use.    I raised a complaint for the same and customer care officer sent again a service engineer to check what fault is there and where engineer declared that again Membrane is faulty and need to replace it but warranty is not there so that I have pay again approx. amount of Rs. 3000/- again for New Spare Parts.   Why membrane is not working on 4 Month after purchasing it.    My hard eared money does not matter for company then why should I go forward with your company and I refused to buy new product again.   This is what happened with me and I explained.
    But now I am going to explain below mentioned point that what I observed in this scenario, please note this is very important
    1.      Why Service Engineer giving us opened seal product with this reason that store incharge has to note Bar Code of product which is on each product of KENT.
    2.      Why Service Engineer suggests that do you want product from me or want to buy direct from company.
    3.      Why Bar Code is not printed on outside of packet.
    4.      If Bar code is necessity then why Service Engineer is not tearing sealed packet in front of customer.
    5.      Why KENT Spare parts working till warranty deadline or one week or one month extra.  After that buy new product. 
    OBERVATION :
    1.    Service Engineer is giving faulty product to us after removing from other customer's home or damaged product from their ware house / godown / store.    With the help of Store Incharge.
    2.     KENT is reputed brand in the market and do not want existing customer in Future because now this company has achieved many awards.   Finally, do not bother about the customer's feed back or suggestion or compliant.   
    3.    EXAMPLE :    If I buy a Handy Cam of Sony with 2 Yrs. warranty,  If I buy a Refrigerator of Whirlpool with 5 Yrs. Warranty,   If I buy a Mobile of Apple with 1 Yr. Warranty of whole product and  AFTER THESE GIVEN WARRANTY OF PRODUCT & ITS SPARE PART STOP FUNCTIONING....THEN NO BODY IN THE WORLD WOULD BUY THESE PRODUCT.       If I buy any spare parts of above product and that is not functioning after  1 month  or   1 week of finishing warranty and tell me how would be your thinking for that particular brand.
    I am writing this email to you with this hope that I trusted on your brand and may be your lower department called service department spoiling your image in the market after giving us USED or FAULTY product to end user.    If you do not take consideration on this matter and there is no use of getting lots of awards on your product then I would assume that your company is running just because of selling of SPARE PARTS.

    Presently, you are dealing in end number of different types of product and then how should I keep trust on other products that those would work after warranty or If I changed any spare parts of those product in future would that work after warranty or not.   I am in dilemma.

      Worst Service. Technician always tries to loot people. Demand more price.
      One of dealer says the boy who goes to check RO he wnats to get extra money. This is his natural habbit.

      I always recomment people not to buy KENT RO.
      When I talked to Area Service Manager that I want to buy product from KENT as he is demanding more money, only technician should install it because my product is under warranty. Area service manager replies if you buy a product from KENT then How the dealer will earn money from customer.
      Really disappointing.

  • I am using Kent Ro for last 3 years, the machine frequently goes out of order. This time again my machine is not working since lockdown was started. Last week onwards, technician has visited 3 times but problem not solved. Kent Technician Jagdish Rana also misbehaved. This is not acceptable and henceforth I will never buy and recommend any Kent Product to anybody. Kent should also check their record how much money we have wasted on repairs.

  • Dr. Mahesh Gupta is a pucca businessman with no ethics. He is a "Dilliwala" whom you cant trust with your money. "Dilliwalas" are infamous for smooth talking and taking away your money with false promises.
    Selling machines with an overdose of advertisment and marketing gimmicks. The machine is very poorly built. I am surprised how an IITian sells this machine and calls it world class. He should be ashamed to call himself an IITian in the first place. There has been no major upgrade to this machine and they look like "jugaad" and work like "jugaad". The parts are horribly laid out in the chamber with the controller board very inaccessible. Now the catch..... The parts are deliberately built weak so that they fail in one year so that the customer has to spend more than Rs 5000.00 per year to buy AMC and keep it in running condition. During service most of the technicians disconnect the smaller filters (like polishing and ultra filters) in the machine and the customer hardly notices it as they dont have to replace under AMC parts and thereby save money.

    The customer grievance redressal mechanism is horrible. A customer cant reach any senior manager of the company. They have deliberately done this to avoid coming in contact with infuriated customers. A customer can only reach a call centre executive and no further. The managers always hide behind their computers.

    I have been buying water for the last 2 months during lockdown as the technician expressed his inability to service in the month of April. Then the phone numbers became invalid. All office numbers of NC Sales & Service are invalid. AMC has been paid in November. I have been repeatedly calling the customer helpline number for service but to no avail. Everyday I am assured of a call from the senior. The monsoon has arrived but a call from the senior executive is still awaited. DOnt know what the service people are busy doing. "Maheshji wake up"...your customer service department is not working and you are paying them salaries. Stop their salaries if they cant keep customers happy.
    A most dissatisfying experience. If this is what we get in the name of "Make in India" then we are better off importing products from China. Atleast they are cheaper.

    You are a qualified IITan. The attitude and behevior your company is practicing is unworthy and not at par with your quality. Do you think once I have sold a product with an advertisement by silver screen personality and money enter in pocket I am successful. It is a shame. Again as I come to know from the aforesaid persons you are a follower of Rabishankar ji it is more shameful. After purchasing a RO Machine No. KR-1805000930 and exhausting the warranty period when I faced problem, I called your Co. through App for service and AMC you sent a chit Company Name Sun Service who took Rs. 13,000/= for providing AMC for 3 years. Now. having facing acute problem I called them but with mute result or always busy for another call. You can not avoid the responsibility as your co. sent the person and the company. I also booked through your App to your company on 16.06.2020. Your company sent me a fake name 'Vivanya Electronics' without address or phone no. Now I want to know what is this? I want immediate remedy from you without any solace.

    Unethical practices, mis selling, improfessional behaviour of technicians have been observed by me several times.I can understand that the service centres of Kent are outsoured agencies but the ownership of providing a good service lies with Kent. If Kent or Team feels that they will not be able to provide a good quality of service, they should inform the customer upfront at the time of buying the product.

  • Hi - We have paid Rs 7,500 for a Yearly AMC for Kent Water Purifier and following up on this service request with case id is 200602-03215 against serial number KR1702002646 since 02 June 2020 for General Service...there has been no visit or responses after calling and sending emails multiple times...this is pathetic and unprofessional! This is frustrating and disappointing !
